DQ Tuesday

True, for two people who spend a considerable amount of time together in a non-romantic kind of way for the sake of achieving respective goals, at the very best and time permitting, you've become kinda, a small kinda, one of the current objects of my "affection" (as are Taco Bell's Nacho Supreme and Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate line, eh salah, itu mah addiction ya...). Naturally, we are bound to be open to each other...and you are. But me, see, I still need a bit more privacy--which is a paradox in itself, since I'm writing this down for the whole world to see. Back to the privacy thing, please don't pull another of the "who was that on the phone with you?" variety. I'm minding my own business even though I'm dying to know if it had been the same person (read: girl) that had been calling you omnihourly. He he he.

Oh, one more thing. Please spare me the detail. I would never bring up a certain undergarment problem--while trying to fix it up, gasp!-- to a person of the opposite sex, no matter how close we are. Ha ha ha.

When I grow up, I want to be just like her

Dia:
*diem dua detik* Jangan lah, jangan sampe. Ntar loe hidupnya kayak nerd pula lagi.

Ya enggak, kerja sih kerja, social life ya harus jalan juga dong. Kan asik tuh, nggak usah pake komitmen ama siapa-siapa, kecuali ama diri elu, kerjaan, dan bonyok aja kali.

Hmm..iya kali awalnya asik nggak komitmen, tapi kan entar lama-lama loe pasti punya keinginan buat settle down.

Iya ya...we'll see.

and then this seminar announcement....

Dear Faculty and students:

Dr. H***** is the highest ranked female researcher in Hitachi Central Research Laboratory.

The seminar would be very informative on the Japan's top research laboratory.

The Advisor

The good doctor came up with one of the most succesful crystallization techniques used in production. I wonder what kind of a person she is, succesfully breaking the glass ceiling like that. Well, first and foremost, she's smart, soft spoken, polite, proactive, stylish and a bit shy. I wonder how her social and other lives are.

In reverse chronological order

"Do you mind if I keep this channel on?" An employee at a local eatery asked me. We were the only ones watching the big screen TV.
"No, no..."
"Which one do you prefer? That one or this?" He pointed at one of the other TV sets broadcasting yet another sporting event.
"This." I motioned my head towards the soccer match played at our big screen.

Between 22 well built, dynamically moving, good looking Latin Americans and stuck up middle age men in oversized umbrellas, it's clear which ones I prefer.

Who in the right mind will put an approximately 200 g of thawed salmon fillet on a 1200 W microwave heating for 5 minutes and 30 seconds (that really amounts to 396 kJ of energy, and with a Salmon heat capacity of approximately 2.7 J/g C, corresponds to over 800 degrees C of cooking temperature)?

The innocent fillet shrinked too much, exhibited unappetizing burnt marks, and was not easy to masticate. I had to employ a knife, one of those crappy plastic picnic ones, even then, it was still hard to cut it into smaller chewable bits.

--

This morning I woke up from a long sleep nursing my cold (or is it allergy?). I was just thinking of a series of dreams, yeah, like that Bob Dylan song. I rarely dreamt about people in real life. In these ones, I did. If nothing else, I almost forgot how you look like, it's all coming back now.

Ascorbic acid

I am thinking it's a sign
that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images
and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned

and I have to speculate
that God himself did make
us into corresponding shapes
like puzzle pieces from the clay

It's true, it may seem like a stretch
but its thoughts like this that catch
my troubled head when you're away
when I am missing you to death

when you are out there on the road
for several weeks of shows
and when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home

---

Ah, to be sick and out of shape...one can use it as an excuse to a much needed break from work. If only one's preliminary exam is not set to be in one month and one does not need to finish the corresponding proposal and submit it to one's advisor in a mere few days. ARGH!

Breathing through my mouth (darn stuffy nose)

There were a lot of interesing conversations during the seven hours we spent on the road today. Half of them were about our--or rather, your--favorite subject, relationships.

You said you've heard too many stories about unfaithful marriages, either or both partners were guilty of charge. It runs in your family, your friends', your co-workers'. It's depressing that the world could be such a dreary place to be lived in. The next second, you came back to your usual optimistic nature. Trust is important, you said, but above all, one must survive, should one experience that kind of violation.

I never understand why one breaches the most important commitment one could ever make. It's easy to say it now, I guess. When one faces the opportunity so attractive, that's probably when the moral imperative vaporizes perniciously. Ah, to be young and naive (and of good nature?), to treat and in return expecting to be treated fairly.

Modesty vs Vanity

A friend asked NY's to sing at her church yesterday since their usual singer was not available. I was there for emotional support, not that she needed it.

A snippet of conversation regarding the "gig":
"Kak Inda Hon, kamu kalo mo ikut liat orang nyanyi pake bajunya yang agak alim ya. Jadi pikirin baju yang biasa kamu pake ke St. Mary's, trus kurangi kadar keseksiannya 50%."
Hmm...what I classified as a "sexy" outfit is anything with uncovered spaghetti straps and low cleavage cut. Never wear any of those to church or anywhere else for that matter anyway. But it was still hard to come up with a "cute" outfit with the kind of coverage NY required. She has created a monster (inside joke).

Another one...

Kak Inda Hon, coba dengerin nih orang nyanyi ya. *mulai beryanyi*
2 bait kemudian...
Gimana menurut kamu? Masak kayak gitu dibilang kurang menjiwai lagu loh.

Heh? Hmm...udah sih sepertinya. Tapi kalo mau lebih menghayati, coba aja mikirin nyanyiin lagunya untuk hmm...Mas Ganteng misalnya. Ha ha ha.

That will work

I'm glad I can be of any help. HA HA HA

DQ Saturday

You have three choices in life: live for today, live for tomorrow, or live for the past. When all channels have been exhausted, living for today does not equal the pleasantries it is supposed to be corresponded with. Living for tomorrow, as always, gives a sense of hope and with it a stand to fight for whatever that might go wrong or right or in between. And that, my friend, can be exhausting as well because tomorrow seems to be a million light years away. And really in the grand scheme of things, one is nothing but a small speck of dust in the wind. Living in the past, on the other hand, brings about the old, the ever familiar, the comfort zone. How attractive it is! I'd rather living today for tomorrow. But for today, I miss talking to you. I miss you.

Dreamy

At the ToT tonight, the speaker was one of my favorite people of all time. Sufficed it to say, I was so so happy to see him again after all this time.

Following the costumary hugs:
"H, how long have you been here?"
"It's ten years next year, Father." I carefreely laughed.
"Really, yeah, I couldn't believe it's been that long."
"Uh, uh." I expressed a similar disbelieve.
"Do you remember?" I reminisced, "when I first arrived here, my father called up the church and said, 'I have my daughter starting school here, I would like to talk face to face with one of the priests.' And then the next afternoon, we came to see you."
"Yes, yes."

Anyhow, here is a thing, if my vocation is to become a married person, I'd like to have him as the celebrant. Ah, a Texas spring wedding, maybe? =)

Book meme

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
"The Oxford academic Frederic Harrison (who might himself be presumed to boast some competency in the classics) took an equally caustic view of the benefits of prolonged communion with literature, history or painting. 'Culture is a desirable quality in a critic of new books, and sits well on a possessor of belles lettres,' he allowed, but 'as applied to everyday life or politics, it means simply a turn for small fault-finding, love of selfish ease, and indecision in action. The man of culture is one of the poorest mortals alive. For simple pedantry and want of good sense no man is his equal."
NB:
The choice was between a bunch of books on electrical stuff or the book from which the above was quoted from.

Random Friday

"How old are you?" The guy already violated one of the sanctums of womanhood.
"Twenty-seven."
"You don't look like twenty-seven. You look like twenty-two."
"Aw. Thank you. Ha ha ha." I'm not sure if I should be flattered or mad.

--

"OK, I'm going to the library, I'll call you when I got back."
"The library? The bar or the ..."
"I know you would say that, the real one... Do I really look like the type? Beside, it's 1 PM Friday."

--

I borrowed two books purely for reading pleasures. Three or four Designing Women reruns in a row is not fitting for before bedtime activity anymore.
They are:
  1. Status Anxiety. Ha, interesting, it is written by someone who can still be categorized to belong in our generation. Let's see how entertaining and witty it is.
  2. The Complete Peanuts. I believe, we had a copy left back home.
--

A really big guy in my research area of interest (the advisor ranks him as one of the top three authorities in the world) gave a talk this afternoon. I came up with a question for him out of naivity. He answered it clearly and added a few more extra points. I had thought that the method they used is not really that practical. He confirmed that humbly. But then in this industry, there are always bountiful of innovation and improvement that break whatever physical limitation.

Anywho, I'm going to ask his signature for my copy of a book he wrote.

I'm interested to participate at this photocontest for International Education Week at our school.

how Americans use sports memorabilia in restaurant decor

2. Criteria:
a. Size: 8 x 10 to 16 x 20
b. Mounted on foam board for display
c. Previously unpublished

"Tuesday, September 26, 2006 There`s a 50% chance that I`m writing this just for the sake of the IP address. Haha. A few things I learned about this place today:

I'm guessing Paris. Ah, how romantic. But wait, it's not squeaky clean there. So, I don't know. And number 4, ah, what a lucky girl. =)

Hi

A friend once told me he couldn't understand when people complain about their lack of conversation topics. The fact that there is nothing to converse about is a conversation topic, which brings us to the lack of update here in the Dungeon. It's been, what, five days since my last post?

I was feeling particularly hostile towards a certain person last Saturday, hence the post below. Unlike 80% of the matters posted in this blog, it wasn't anything about the yucky love stuff. It was about the disappointment of being taken for granted by somebody you consider a good friend.

Anyhow, it got carried over to Sunday. NY dragged me out of the bed. I went to church with her with a heart as hard as diamond drilling bit. I didn't follow any of the readings, I didn't sing, I even didn't take communion. It faded out towards the evening. I realized, it was just me, as usual, being overly dramatic about some ridiculous sentimental feeling.

And what did I know, it seems that that person really can read my mind. Without me even no where close to touching the subject, he voluntary conveyed the details. It made me come to my senses once and again.

Ah, unto the better days (and self) ahead.

Update:
What I mean by coming to my senses is to not putting high expectations on people I couldn't count on. I was facing an almost exact situation today and it didn't bother me at all. Yay, independence!

I couldn't believe I put such an unnecessary high hope on you and on me. Never ever going into that kind of thing again. Never.

Rec buddy is here!

Lalu, pembicaranya bilang dia percaya sama teori:

Eh, tapi kalo sulung ama sulung berantem terus dong. Harusnya sulung ama bungsu gitu.

Nggak ah, kalo sama bungsu pasti gue sebel banget. Manjanya itu loh. Sedangkan gue kan pengen dimanja. He he he.

Lah gue bungsu...gue gak manja.

Elu, nggak manja? Manja lagi...ih manja banget.

HAHAHAHAHHAHA....gue udah tau loe bakal bilang gitu. Kartu gue udah kebuka semua di loe HAHAHAHAHA.

HOOAHOAOHAHO...ya gitu deh.

Boredom needs company

It's another gloomy, thunderstorm warning morning. I started off the day with measurement and more measurement. I came upon the Rolling Stone's website from the Google desktop bar. Thank goodness, otherwise I am really going crazy. I browsed over the video section and found a music clip. Been hitting the play button over and over and over.

At 10:30, I made a phonecall to a girlfriend whom I haven't talked to in ages. She's been on my mind lately--along with two or three people I should always be in touch with. She was a frequent reader of Misnomer but she hasn't had a clue about the existence of this blog despite of the subtle clue. *wink* Should I just tell her?

The girlfriend was one year my senior in highschool. She'll be finishing a PhD (in Biochemistry from a reputable fancy university, no less!) sometimes next spring. This years is her tenth year living in the States and going to school. We are pretty much in the same boat.

"Really, what kind of life we've lead all these years," I said.
"Well...we'll be through it sometime." I envy her state-of-mind. She's always calm and logical.

Before her cell phone died on us, we made plan to watch The West Side Story in two weeks and another plan for an end-of-the-year roadtrip to Las Vegas and surrounding area. Anyone wanna join us for any of these? Anyone?

Between this and The Smashing Pumpkins

I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel

Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

.
.
.

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see

I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Sport Commandment # 29

Never mix tennis and racquetball, unless you can master handling the two different racquets , for example, to return the raquetball ball without looking like a short-sighted fool.

See ya Sunday.

Hidup Baru (bukan saya)

Hoi, Want...

Coba ya, kemaren malem, gue udah kayak orang gila olahraga sendirian.

Selamat menempuh hidup baru aja deh.

Love Thursday

Totally, totally stealing this from Hani

"Pinjem", ya, Han. Hihihi.

Inside Her My Bag

The bag: Maroon/Brown Balenciaga Motorcycle Bag (knock-off, made in HK, hoahoaohaoha)

On her trip home last May, NY stop-overed in HK for two days. She promised to bring back some people --you know who you are-- some top quality designer bag knock offs. In actuality, she only got mom, her, and me. The two of them each got one of those Coach monograms. For me, since the forewarned "I don't want anything monogrammed and fake," she bought me the motorcycle bag instead. Really, it wasn't love at first sight for me. The bag resembles what an inang-inang would wear and don't get me started on the "tentacles". But in the end, I grew fond of it. It makes organizing easier with the inside pockets and pouch.

The content (divided into three categories, clockwise, started from the left):

  1. The techies stuff
    • MP3 player with the arm band--great for Rec trip
    • Flash drive--great for computer lab trip
    • Cellphone, handset, charger--great for organizing social and academic life and of course for gossipping

  2. The administrative stuff
    • Checkbook--for that last minute rent payment
    • Two red pens (couldn't function without), two black pens (I never really use these), and a highlighter
    • Hello Kitty keychain--office and lab keys (dubbed the dirtiest, literally, Hello Kitty in the whole wide world), multicolor beaded keychain (apt, cars, mailbox)
    • Rosary
    • Prescription sunglasses (never really use these either)
    • Wristlet (financial stuff, blood donor card, towel card, IDs, a pen, and a lipgloss)

  3. The hygene stuff
    • Rewetting drop for contacts
    • Bodywash
    • Bodyspray
    • Antibacterial thing
    • Tissue
    • Oil blotter (I just found this inside one of the pockets today, it's NY's)
    • Ponytail
    • 500-mg Ponstan (my favorite analgesic ever)
Really, I don't carry this bag and the whole content other than when I go to school. Most of the time, I saunter around with only the wristlet and the cellphone.

That's all folks!

Gaagh

If my face were Italy back in 79 AD, there is a Mt. Vesuvio waiting to explode. Man, 27 years old and I'm still having deadly pimples.

Yay, it's ToT time!

Tonight is the first of the six of Theology on Tap series. The original ToT was jump started by the Archdiocese of Chicago 25 years ago and has been a hit amoung young Catholic professionals across America ever since. Where else can you say, "Hey Father, let me buy you a beer" appropriately while immersing in discussions bridging the 2000-year old faith to today's secular daily life?

At B/CS, these events are sponsored by the Diocese of Austin and hosted by Catholic Seeds, a local group of young professional, 21-39 years old, single or married. I love the Seeds' disclaimer that it is not a Catholic singles group where, for example, you can execute a JLAH/JLAW plan. I mean, you sure can but that's not supposed to be *cough* the main purpose.

The complete schedule and speakers:
Oct 3 - Rev. Italo Dell'Oro - "Where is the Church Headed? Pope Benedict XVI's First 500 Days"

Oct 10 - Arthur Canales - "Insights on Christian Marriage: Why So Many Want It and Why So Many Fail at it in the United States?"

Oct 17 - Rev. David Konderla - "A Recipe for Success: The Ingredients for a Healthy Relationship"

Oct 24 - Rev. Mike Sis - "Decisions, Desires, Discernment: Does God Have a Plan for Me?"

Oct 31 - NO THEOLOGY ON TAP – HALLOWEEN

Nov 7 - Sarah Hayes - "Recognizing God in Everyday Events: Is There More There Than Meets the Eye?"

Nov 14 - Rev. Brian McMaster - "Current Reproductive Technologies and the Catholic Faith"

[pervert mode]Hmm....especially looking forward to that last one. [/pervert mode]

NB: Around this time two years ago, I took this picture while walking home from Fitzwilly's after the ToT. Time sure flies.

Saturday Epiphany

Hello,

It hit me. It was always about me needing you (emotionally?). I've become a non-independent, too much accomodating, yeowoman I always despise. But then, you did things that made me realize you need me probably as much as I need you. And that my friend, is a warm fuzzy bit of emotion I've been feeling, my natural high. If only I can keep it like that.

Relationship, beside love (and romance, teuteup), is much about interdependence and solid team work. Just like you proclaimed the other day. I hope I'd find that person to share it with...adventually eventually.

What are you doing the rest of your life?

I've known you, what, 1/3 of my life? How many of those years has been filled with lies? Yours. I am good on finding information, man, it's what I do with those information that's questionable.

How could a so called wise ass grown up man does those kind of things to himself? But then since your lies do not do me any damage, I decide to play along with it, well, more to ignoring things.

The truth is, you used to be the one person I look up to, an older brother I never have. And I've grown. Have you ever noticed how cold I have been all these years?

You're clearly on the path of self destruction. You need help. I've washed my hands.

The Crescent Moon and the Star

Today's two lab sections were long and exhausting. I was practically up on my feet for nine hours straight. At first, it was to set up the things we needed for the lab. Just in time where I thought everthing was running fine, three of the students showed me their funny lithography results. We needed to redo their wafers. The last guy went out five minutes before the next section started and I, naturally, did not have time to eat lunch. The second section was better.

I nuked a Croissant Pocket and ate lunch at six and then went home. I turned on the TV, a Law & Order SVU episode was halfway played. Before I knew, I was asleep, a good deep one. But before, on the background I heard Detective Benson confinding on her mother...
Benson
You were raped, for God sakes. Are you telling me that you don't understand why she did what she did?

Serena Benson
Oh, I understand it. That does not mean that I condone it.

Benson
Wait, are you saying that you wouldn't have done exactly the same thing if you'd had the chance?

Serena Benson
Is that what you would have wanted me to do?

Benson
Yes!

.
.
.

Benson
I hate him for what he did to you.

Serena Benson
So do I — and if he hadn't, you would not be here.
An hour later, I woke up fresh and ready to rumble. Rec Buddy called a few minutes later .

"Masih cape, lo? Ke Rec yuk."
"Tadi capek banget sih, sekarang udah seger. Ayok..."
"Ya udah, gw jemput elo sekarang yah." It was his turn to drive.

On our way to the Rec, I pointed to the crescent moon and a star on its higher left. They were beautiful against the dark background and the clear sky. I wish I had my camera with me.

"Kayak lambang di mesjid ya."
"Ha ha, iya, pas banget sama bulan puasa."

An article discussing the crescent moon-star in Islam and an equally interesting article on the use of crescent moon as "sleep" symbol in computer interface.

Because I have nothing else to tell

Uhm, do you find the above picture cute (slightly larger size, here)? I know at least three people say so. I call it "The Three Amigos and a Troll," specifically, Mr. Bear, Mr. Doggie Bear, Mr. Bear Bear and the unnamed Troll. They are safely perched on a hanging shelf three feet above The Mini. Ah, enough with the cuteness.

How is everyone's first day of puasa? When I got back from the Rec tonight, I found lots of cars parked up on the street. I was wondering what was up with this phenomena since it wasn't a Thursday, a Friday or a Saturday. And then I saw the mosque, ah, tarawih was in session.

Anyway, on Saturday I felt a sudden urge to (slow)cook. Luckily, we had that rump roast that had been sitting on the freezer for almost month. That kind of meat is perfect for braising. I threw together two packages of instant Rendang spices, a can of coconut milk, about 800 mL of water, and the cut up meat into the slowcooker. Voila, three hours later, we had the pseudo Rendang done. Yum! Eat it over a bed of Basmati rice (it was on sale, really really cheap), and it feels like as if I was eating my favorite Nasi Padang restaurant.

Okay, back to laundry now.

Drama Princess Saturday

We've grown apart. Me and my readings, you and your daydreamings. I put aside that toned down Machiavelli book and we started talking about everything and nothing, just like the old time. And before we knew, two hours had passed. "I'll be back on the weekends. Promise me, we'll do this again then." I smile.

-----

Aha, I forgot that the new moon this time means the start of Ramadhan. That moonphase display on the right is not just for nothing.

Have a blessed penitential month, dearies. Would you find this collection of Ramadhan links useful?

I'll be waiting for the buka bersama and the makan-makan for Eid.

The Everlasting Man

It sure takes a lot of eyes and body coordination to finish reading more than half of a paperback printed in tiny typeset while moving about in an elliptical machine for an hour each day these past three weeks. Once in a while, some sort of enlightment accompanied by little smiles emerged from reading these materials.

...and to be discussing some of these ideas with you and in turn only to get weary eyed in disbelief. I guess it's for the best that we agree to disagree on every single fundamental stuff. At least "I" won by 1300 years. :p

It's amazing the clarity that needs to be present on (or the one that will be the result of) writing a curicullum vitae.

The advisor is insisting on nominating yours trully for a prestigious fellowship from one of the prestigious technology companies this side of the universe. The one I have not a miniscule hope on getting. But, hey, a girl gotta do what a girl gotta do, right?

Gosh, why do I have to be so disorganized and disoriented at the same time?

Update:
I'm up to 5-page of glorified bs. I feel like a sell out. Ha ha ha.

Another Virgoan

Happy 34th, Din.
[Really, you're already that old? j/k Time passes so quickly.]

I'm not sure how you rank among "my" Virgoans. Pretty high, I suppose. :)

I Wear My Sunglasses at Night

Out of the stupid and unfortunate stuff I've done all my life, I managed to:
1) drop the left lense of a stylish prescription eyeglasses through the small opening between the elevator and the floor. I swear I can hear the sound of it breaks as it lands on the ground floor.
2) "misplace" the spare glasses, which by the way, are old and scratchy.

Now I'm pretty much relied on contact lenses. The thing is, I have issues with the contact on the left eye. It gets blurry from time to time (and to make things worse, I usually wear these contact lenses to sleep, being lazy and never mastered the quick way to put them on).

To remedy the situation, I usually:
a) would blink, a lot. Gosh, who knows, some people might think I'm winking at them.
b) grab the rewetting drops and use it one too many times. If people see me, it looks like I've been crying all day, what with the redness and the teary eyes.
c) and when b) is not enough, I'd take the said contact out, clean it and put it back on, which does not solve the problem at all. It'd still be blurry.
d) When I couldn't handle the blurriness, the blinking, the eyedrops, and the cleaning, I would just take them off. I can still handle life without eyesight correction devices, well, maybe except to watch DVD with subtitles.
Oh, and appropos to the DVD watching...
e) would just go ahead and wear my out-of-style prescriptive (sun)glasses.

"What a dork!" NY would tease me. But hey, whatever works, you know. This song by Corey Hart would be appropriate everytime.

My favorite Virgoan

That cute girl on the left, let me tell you. It's almost heartbroken that she has been through quite a lot of medical procedure from such a tender young age. But hey, she survives, a goodsport and a firecracker that she always is.

She has blessed with and accomplished so much. The coolest family, a bright mind, an easygoing personality, a functional leadership skill, a meaningful relationship. If nothing else, she's on the express track towards wellroundedness. A nice person too, one will definitely enjoy her company anytime.

Happy 21st, Kak Ika Hon.

What you lack in age, you make up for in madness (among other things...about Korean drama, so help us God).

Live long and prosper & may the Force be with you, dear.
It might be the gloomy day, it might be the hormonal thing, it might be that I am just tired. I tear up a bit just to think how all road just lead back to you. I thought I have let you go completely. I haven't.

Fat Burning Zone

I love Rec Buddy for his commitment on research (not school related field). He takes this whole research thing religiously: performing experiments, analyzing results, gathering conclusion, and finally presenting it to whoever he thinks worth explaining to.

The top three on his current list of interests: personal relationships, health and fitness, and lately, home furnishing. He mainly relies on search engine for the last two. The problem is there are googols of things one'd find scattered around the information superhighway, it's the better judgment that determine if what you read is what you need and what actually works for you.

Take for example, our latest frenzy about fat burning zone, which turns out is nothing but a myth taken from oversimplifying a scientific result on human physiology. All this time, Rec Buddy has been feeding me with his findings, until last night when I decided to do my own research.

Fat burning zone is defined as the heart rate region where you would burn more fat than carbohydrates, and thus, has been claimed as the ultimate tool for weight loss.

A low intensity exercise, associated with a lower heart rate, burnt more fat than carbohydrates. Lower heart rate means the heart could deliver more oxygen around. Since fat burning is an aerobic process, the higher oxygen to carbon dioxide ratio means there are more fat burnt compared to carbohydrate. At the opposite end, a high intensity exercise, associated with a higher heart rate, burns more carbohydrate than fat.

The catch is, for the same exercising period, a low intensity exercise produces lower total calories compared to the high intensity exercise. While the ratio of fat to carbohydrate burnt during low intensity exercise is higher then that of the high intensity exercise, the total fat burnt of the latter is larger than the that of the former.

Adding to the already complicated thing, heart rate is not necessarily a reliable measure of ratio of oxygen burnt and carbon dioxide produced during exercise.

What one needs to loose weight is a negative calory balance. Fat or carbohydrate burnt do not make a difference.

So here we are, resuming our "high" intensity training one more time...

Bloggin' time

Pak Dodol wrote about the saturation of the blogosphere and at the end this is what he said.

I think I'm missing the good ol' blogosphere.

The silly online diarists' neighborhood where everybody knows your name.

Ah, I miss watching Cheers. Digressing.

What he points out below is what I couldn't disagree more.

You know what, that title above, The Saturation of the Blogosphere? Check that. It should've read: The Saturation of My Blogosphere. My personal blog-world can barely take in new blogs, other than those whose authors I know personally or I can at least relate to personally.

My Bloglines consists of blogs from authors I know in person and/or can relate to. I have stopped blogwalking for quite a while and been mainly relied on the feed aggregator for my daily dose of blogreadings. My comment on his entry:

Iya, jadi jarang blogwalk, yang ngenalin Bloglines kan elu.

Saking jenuhya sama blog sendiri yang "saturated" dengan hal-hal nggak jelas keseharian, sekarang gue malah nge-ghostwrite. Ha ha ha. Masih dengan tema yang sama, tapi rasanya lebih seger. Ha ha ha.

Which brings us to this topic...

Main Entry: ghost·write
Pronunciation: 'gOs(t)-"rIt
Function: verb
intransitive verb : to write for and in the name of another
transitive verb : to write (as a speech) for another who is the presumed author
Remember the running-partner-turn-Rec-buddy? Other than KYH, my labmates, Bu Didi (virtually), KIkH, Ade Hon (the last two mostly on weekends), he's the one I spend a considerable amount of time with almost everyday. Naturally, a lot of his life got intertwined with mine, tidbits volunteered and exchanged.

One day, bored with the nature of my blog, I got a lightbulb working and decided to do a ghostwrite for him instead also. It is a fun thing to do trying to make it look like a guy's writing. He thinks it's nothing like his style. And, Ka, Toto said it sounds feminine.

Anyhow, I am having such a high time ghostwriting, eventhough the "subject" of the blog and his roomates couldn't really get the humor I am trying to convey.

Read all about it here.

Yang akan tiba

7:53 PM, saya lihat keluar jendela. Apakabar?

TA (Teaching Anxiety)

Last Sunday, which coincidentally was my birthday, was the day before I started teaching the first two lab sections of an Electrical Engineering class. I am not an electrical engineer by training, but my research has pulled me into this kind of stuff early on.

Throughout the day, I felt anxious more than ever even though that was going to be my fourth time teaching the same materials over these five years. I know I am pretty experienced, on the other hand, there is a self-imposed pressure to make this year's an ever better practice.

As I noted, the pressure was there but not the drive. I spent the whole day to not even close to prepare the basic methodology, to ponder on what I am going to say to the students or to anticipate their questions.

Finally at eight that Monday morning, I started working on my little handout (rules, contact information, office hours, etc.) for the students. One section of the lab was at 11:30 AM, another section was at 3 PM, the last one will be on Tuesday morning.

While preparing the handout, I got on my mood and it all came back to me. It was going up hill from there.

That first lab was very short. We began with general introduction and safety rules before got on the gist of the lab. The kids were nice. I have enough confidence that I can handle them.

I spent the time between sections making little roster of their e-mails, grading their pre-lab work, and organizing my lab folder with the manual, fabrication charts and notes.

Hmm, this teaching gig is getting interesting by the minute. Should I consider going into academia for my little plan in the not so distant future? It feels like I could enjoy teaching. But working on a tenure position is probably not going to be that fun. Besides, I really need to go into the real world. So probably the answer is still a no.

Plateau oh plateau

KS says:
http://www.weightlossforall.com/target%20heart%20rate%20zone.htm

X says:
elu udah itung?

jadi 125 itu
lower limit nya
upper limitnya bisa sampe 165 kl gw

iya gue juga
nggak sih
gue biasanya 155 paling tinggi

yah loe ngga apa2 segitu
soalnya angka 220 itu ngga exact kok
loe baca detail deh

kayak nggak gerak
"the higher range of the zone but you will burn more calories however most will be in the form of carbohydrates and less total fat."

iya yah

"Although anaerobic exercises burn more carbohydrates they can be important in any weight loss program. They help burn fat indirectly by increasing the metabolic rate after an exercise session"

aduhhh gimana dong
bingung nih
brp jadi nya

makanyaaaa

udah lah ntar aja di pikirin
hehehhh
mo cari plateau dulu

heheheh
nah iya itu lebih penting
coba elu ukur hr [rested heart rate] skrg

gimana caranya gw udah lupa

yah cuman ngedengerin pulse aja kan ya
15 detik aja kali 4
ato kalo rajin tungguin semenit

bentar yah gw ukur

gue 61

gw 60 pas
sedetik satu gini

hebat ya
brp ya bagusnya
"Children age 10+ and adults: 60-100
Well-conditioned athletes: 40-60"
cieeee...elu well conditioned

elo jg 61 gitu

ayo kita bikin 50

jadi nih ceritanya mungkin yg salah di HR nya yah
selain makan2 yg ngga jelas
dan jgn laper aja
makan musti tetep 6 kali sehari

iya
dan bener2 kecil kalorinya ya
oh susahhnyaaa

iya
6 x IHOP yah jebol juga

yoiii
sekali dua minggu aja kali makan gede gitu
ato sebulan sekali???
haooaoha

sekali 2 minggu aja lah

juga katanya latihannya bagusnya diseling2
ntar badannya udah terlalu adaptasi jadinya nggak turun juga

di seling2 apa tuh

di ganti2 gitu rutinnya

hmmm iya jg
kita udah ganti2 berkali2 nih

tapi apa yaaa??

kita kayaknya perlu istirahat nih kamis kali yah

ini hari apa sih?
Rabu ya

kamis jumat ngga latihan yuks

iya kali ya
okeh

terus mulai sabtu lagi

tapi jangan makan gila-gilaan selama nggak latihan itu!

yoi

Fashion no-no

Kak Yada Hon, orang suka loh liat cowo pake Polo.

Ihh..iya..trus pake kacamata pilot.

...aviator?

Iya itu...

Ja ja ja..trus pake postman bag dikesampingin yang dari kulit...trus pake Crocs...pink

Iya, dari atas sampe bawah pink...iuhhh... ja ja ja ja...

Iuhhh...ja ja ja.

Jadi TA lagi

trus kan pas gue mo bayar, penjaganya bilang, "You got the good stuff, huh."

hahaha...ya ampun hahaha, ternyata TA nya pemabok
respek lah
TA-nya ternyata asik, gak kaku biru

biru?
asal aja sih itu...maksud gw, TA nya nggak dingin, dingin=biru=kaku, gitu
jajajajaja...oh gitu...iya, haduh, coba kalo TA-nya suka clubbing, pasti lebih seru lagi nih ceritanya
yoi

Tomorrow

For so many years this time around, I'd turn up the volume to this song and tear up a bit. The older I am the more melancholic I become.

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet

Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all

And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

Doublecross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin dues down to see

That we don't even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope

Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made,
I know you better than you fake it to see

That we dont care to shake these zipper blues
And we dont know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

The street heats the urgency of sound
As you see there's no one around

At 26 I find friendships that shall last more than this lifetime (hello dearies!), the idea of love that I seem to never grow out of and some light at the end of the "higher education" tunnel. What will 27 bring?
